Downtown Batavia turns green for Arbor Day on Friday April 24th. The Batavia Environmental Commission, Batavians for Clean Energy and Conservation and Water Street Studios have teamed up with Batavia MainStreet’s first quarter arts walk to create a themed event called the “Green Walk.” The Green Walk invites environmentally friendly artists, groups and businesses to be showcased at downtown Batavia businesses. Event information and a registration form is available by phoning Batavia MainStreet office at (630) 761-3528, emailing britta@downtownbatavia.com or downloading a form off the MainStreet website under “news” at www.downtownbatavia.com. The evening is chalked full of art, fun and education for the whole family and is a free event.
A unique attraction of the event is the “Plastic Prom Dress” competition. Green Walkers are encouraged to trade in 10 plastic bags in return for a free downtown Batavia recyclable tote bag. These plastic bags will then be turned over to groups to use as their materials to design and create a unique plastic prom dress. Groups are needed to enter the completion, which will be held from 7:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Green Walk. More detailed Green Walk information, including an event map will be available the week prior to the event on the MainStreet web site or at each participating business.
The Batavia MainStreet program is one of 68 non-profit, community based Main Street organizations in the state of Illinois. The mission of Batavia MainStreet is to enhance the identity of Batavia’s downtown area as the heart of our community. MainStreet members work through the four points: Design, Economic Restructuring, Organization and Promotion to improve the downtown district. MainStreet volunteers believe the revitalization of Downtown Batavia is essential to our community’s sense of pride, place, and heritage for this and future generations.
